Student Government

AOSR has a great tradition of promoting and sustaining Student Councils for all sections of the school: elementary school, middle school and high school.  The major purpose for our Student Councils is to provide a voice for the students to express themselves.  In addition, the student councils are actively involved in promoting student activities, raising money to help areas of the world stricken by natural disasters, and helping to sustain a more stable environment.

High School Student Council

Officers for the high school student council are elected by the full student body for the Executive Board positions in May to take effect at the start of the new school year.  In addition, each class has its own set of officers that are elected in September of the school year.

Middle School Student Council (STUCO)

The American Overseas School of Rome’s Middle School Student Council (STUCO) is organized to bring a greater sense of community, citizenship, communication and FUN to the Middle School population.

The STUCO structure allows for student involvement in decision making, ownership in the planning and execution of events, and a pathway for dialogue of student concerns. As the members of Student Council help to develop and oversee events, it is important that they communicate effectively with their peers and teachers. In the class groups, representatives are elected to serve on the STUCO and they assist to channel information both to and from their advisory peers. STUCO members from all grades within the Middle School are expected to serve as role models and leaders to display and encourage positive peer relations across the AOSR campus. Because fun is contagious, as is the involvement in school and community events, STUCO members are expected to be involved and active within the Middle School.

Middle School STUCO Dances

The STUCO works together throughout the year create social events for students to enjoy. Annual events include an autumn Halloween Dance, Winter Holiday Dance, Valentines Dance, Spring BBQ and Talent Show. The culmination of the year is the Formal Dinner Dance in which the cafeteria is transformed for an enjoyable evening for all seventh and eighth grade students. Sixth graders volunteer to help with the evening and participate as waiters in anticipation for their next year as attendees.  All STUCO events are chaperoned by the fabulous Middle School faculty who get to share the fun with students who attend.

 Middle School STUCO Fundraisers

In the weekly STUCO meetings, students discuss issues of concern both within and outside of the AOSR community.  Regular fundraising events such as bake sales and PTO sponsored Booster Bars have been used to gather funds for outside organizations who help to respond to crisis situations throughout the world.  Fundraisers have provided support to victims of the earthquakes in L’Aquila, Haiti and the flooding in Pakistan.

The middle school student council elections take place during the beginning of October every year. Eligibility requirements are available from the Student Council Advisors.
