Author Visits and Book Reviews
International Storyteller, Cassandra Wye, visited the Elementary School on October 2, 2015 and presented Stories in Motion. The students enjoyed watching Ms. Wye tell stories from around the world through a multi-sensory approach, using props and narration bringing the stories alive!
On November 10, 2014 AOSR Elementary School students had the opportunity to meet Herman Parish, nephew of Peggy Parish who created Amelia Bedelia, the "literal-minded housekeeper". After Ms. Parish passed away in 1988, her nephew continued this popular reading series due to the demands expressed by readers and librarians.
Both Amelia Bedelia's First Day of School and Amelia Bedelia's First Valentine were on the N.Y. Times Bestseller list. AOSR students had already explored many of the books in this popular series with our Elementary School Librarian and were excited to meet Mr. Parish and learn more about the process of creating and publishing a story.
On May 5, 2014, illustrator Sabrina Schmidt hosted workshops for the elementary school students. Jane Bourgerie and Sabrina Schmidt published the fantastic picture book, "People are like Pasta." Not only does the book present a great message for kids, it also includes text that is easy to understand with beautiful and colorful illustrations. Plus, it includes Italian recipes!
Sabrina Schmidt is based in Rome, and owns the design studio Nuvolario and teaches Graphic Design at John Cabot University. The author, Janene Bourgerie, is the Principal of Cayton Design Studios and Jabou Design. She lives in California, but also has a home in the Abruzzi region of Italy.
