AOSR College & University Application Preparation (Gr 9-12)

• The college counseling office works with 9th through 12th grade students on a variety of areas including high school orientation, career assessments, and university preparation.
• During junior year, the counselor meets several times with each student and their parents, to explore the range of choices which the family is interested in pursuing.
• By the beginning of senior year, students should have a list of top university choices narrowed down to which they will apply.
• The college counselor is available to talk with both students and parents at any point during the preparation process about their concerns

Preparing the Application

Depending on the country to which the student is applying, the application process will vary. If the student is applying to a university in the UK, the website for the application is www.ucas.com. The student, the parents or guardians, and the counselor, will determine the 5 universities where the student will apply.

If the student is applying to a university in the USA, most colleges use the Common Application. This is a standard application form that is accepted by over 750 selective colleges and universities in the US. Experience with the Common Application has demonstrated its advantages to students, counselors, and teachers. The concept is simple: students complete one Common Application Form online, and can submit the form to any of the participating colleges. The Common Application is available on the internet at www.commonapp.org.

Junior Year College Preparation Checklist

1. The student should make an appointment with the college counselor for the beginning of the second semester (January/February).
2. The student should begin to discuss relevant topics with their family (geographic preference, major area of study, financial considerations, external test results, etc).
3. After this private discussion, the parent and student should set a second appointment with the college counselor to set realistic goals for the college selection process.
4. Then, the student should continue their research of universities and create an extensive list of around 50 universities to be narrowed down by the beginning of senior year to a list of 15 universities.

Senior Year College Preparation Checklist

1. At the beginning of the year, seniors should make an individual appointment with the College Counselor to confirm options discussed in their junior conferences. After researching colleges, seniors should have a list of around 15 colleges that best meet their criteria.
2. Students applying to the U.S., U.K., or American Colleges in Europe should complete applications and personal essays early in the fall semester.
3. Students need to get recommendation forms to distribute to their teachers by October 15th.

Note: It is the responsibility of the student to make an appointment with the counselor and complete these college-related assignments.

SAT Reasoning and Subject Tests

The American Overseas School of Rome is an official test center for the College Board SAT Reasoning Exam and the SAT Subject Tests.

Registration Information

Students must register directly through the College Board website: www.collegeboard.com

The Test Center Number is 58-380.

The College Board High School Code or CEEB is 748480. The CEEB code is specific to each student’s high school. If your school does not have one, you may leave this area blank on the registration form.

• Please do not put in the High School Code for American Overseas School of Rome (which is 748480) as this is to be used by AOSR high school students ONLY.
• All AOSR students must include the AOSR CEEB code: 748480.

Important Information about International Registration Deadlines

• International deadlines apply to anyone testing outside of the United States, U.S territories, and U.S. commonwealths.
• Completed international registration materials must be received by the international deadlines.
• There is no late registration for international testing. Online and telephone registrations must be completed by the international deadline listed above.
• Students registering through International Representatives must submit their paper registration with full payment by the early registration deadline.
• In August, the SAT is not offered outside of the United States, U.S. territories, and U.S. commonwealths.

SAT Frequently Asked Questions

1.     How can I register for the SAT? May I register and pay directly at AOSR?

The only way to register for the SAT Test is to create an account on the College Board website https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/register. You can neither apply nor pay directly at AOSR.

2.     Does AOSR organize SAT Test prep courses?

It doesn’t. No prep course is organized at AOSR.  Although there are online courses in test preparation for the SATs, AOSR does not, at this time, organize a test prep course at the school.  It is up to the student to prepare in the best way possible for this test: purchasing an SAT Prep Guidebook (we have some in the Counseling Office to borrow) or taking an online course.

3.     How long does the test last?

It depends on the test you take.

The SAT Test without Essay lasts approximately 4 hours (End towards 12.00/12.30)

The SAT Test  with Essay lasts approximately 5 hours (End towards 13.00/13.30)

The SAT Subject Test lasts approximately 1 hour 30 for the first subject. Add one hour for each extra subject.

4.     For the SAT Subject Test with listening (November only), does AOSR provide CD players?

No, AOSR does not provide CD players. It is your responsibility to bring your own device. If you don’t have one, you won’t be able to take this part of the test.

5.     I am on the waitlist. What should I do?

Come the day of the test with your admission ticket. Waitlisted students are admitted to the test center on a first-come, first-served basis. They are seated after all regularly registered test-takers have been admitted and if there are sufficient test materials, staff, and seating available.

6.     What should I bring the day of the exam?

Bring your valid ID, your printed registration ticket, no. “2” pencils, a calculator and an eraser. Cell phones are not authorized.

7.     Should I print my registration ticket?

Yes. The registration ticket on cell phones is not authorized and you will be denied the entrance to the testing room if you don’t show your printed registration ticket.

8.     May I come with a photocopy of my ID or show it on my cell phone?

No. If you don’t have your real valid ID, you won’t be admitted to the testing room.

9.     May I use my cell phone to contact my parents?

No. Cell phones are strictly forbidden in the testing rooms and during the entire test (including breaks). If you choose to bring it, be aware, it will be collected by the staff.

10.  I registered for an SAT with Essay but I’d rather take an SAT without Essay. Is it possible?

Yes. You may opt in/out of the Essay the day of the test if sufficient materials, space, and staff are available to accommodate the change. The request has to be done at check-in. Once seated in your assigned room, change cannot be done. If you are a waitlisted student or are 21 years of age or over, you may not change your essay option.

11.  I registered for an SAT Subject Test. May I change subjects on test day?

Yes, you may choose to add, delete or change subject tests on test day (except for Language with listening) . If you add a test you will be billed for the additional test fee.

12.  I registered for a regular SAT Test but I’d rather take an SAT Subject Test. Is it possible?

No, it is impossible to change the type of test once registered.

13.  May I buy food or drinks the day of the exam at AOSR?

No, there is no possibility to buy food or drinks on campus on test day. Please note that snacks and drinks can be consumed during breaks only.

Be aware that AOSR is a smoking free campus. It is strictly forbidden to smoke even in the parking lot.
